REGULATION
USDA-FDA Grade special lubrication for critical applications
There is gross ignorance about USDA FDA regulation for food/pharma industry and also about availability/information about new advents in specialised products used internationally for such applications in critical services.

SPECIAL REPORT
I hope the industry will take full advantage of Chemtech 2007 International Conference
Mrs Satwant Reddy, Secretary, Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Government of India, New Delhi, presented the keynote address during the inaugural function of international exhibition-cum-conference, Chemtech World Expo 2007, organised by Chemtech Foundation from February 6-10, 2007 in Mumbai. Excerpts from the speech delivered by Mrs Reddy.

POLLUTION CONTROL
Removal of Arsenite using coal flyash water filter
Arsenic contamination has become matter of concern across the world. The exposure to arsenic in drinking water is related to increased risk of cancer in skin, lungs, bladder and kidney. Amongst these, lung and bladder cancer and arsenic associated skin lesion are very common.

High purity piping system - stainless steel vs polymers
This article discusses polymers and the systems available for solid piping being the primary focus, as piping represents a large area of use with potential for lowering costs while improving water quality and system purity. Such systems find applications in semiconductor and pharmaceuticals industry for ultra high purity water delivery

Kinetic study: Methyl acetate esterification catalyzed by Amberlyst-15
In this paper, the kinetic parameters were obtained for the liquid phase reversible reaction of methanol with acetic acid catalyzed by Amberlyst-15. Such parameters are required for many different applications of the model reaction namely, synthesis of methyl acetate, removal of dilute acetic acid from wastewater, and hydrolysis of methyl acetate in reactive distillation or reactive membrane distillation. Experiments were conducted in a batch reactor and determined the kinetic parameters in the temperature range 302 - 333K by varying the catalyst to feed ratio, molar feed ratio and also fit the data in Arrhenius diagram and find the activation energy

COVER STORY
Determination of design parameters of reactive distillation by using esterification reaction system
The reactive distillation has wide applications in the separation processes. The optimum value data of the operating parameters need the support of the reactive distillation column. For this study, here the system is synthesis of methyl acetate from acetic acid and methanol reaction, catalyzed by the Amberlyst-15. The study is focused on the optimization of operating parameters such as reflux ratio, catalyst loading, molar feed ratio and temperature.

FOCUS
ANN and regression analysis based predictions of BOD5 and COD for refinery wastewater
Industrial wastewater quality is indicated by several physico-chemical and biological parameters. If a suitable correlation is established between them, some difficult and not instantaneously available parameters can be easily predicted. Such correlations are traditionally achieved by regression analysis.

Choosing a ball valve for alternative fuel service
When choosing a shut-off ball valve for natural gas vehicles
(NGV) or compressed natural gas vehicles (CNG) applications, the
first consideration should be certification. Is the ball valve you're
considering certified in the locations that your product will beoperating? If not, you should consider a different ball valve.

Experimental and simulation studies on the effect of pressure drop across horizontal pipe for air/palm oil two-phase flow
The contact of two or more immiscible liquids is encountered widely in the chemical and petroleum industries. The present work attempts to study experimentally the effect of two-phase flow on pressure drop across pipe and compare with simulated results.

Keeping Air Quantity and Velocity under Control - Magnetrol 141
Magnetrol presented the Thermatel TD1 “thermal dispersion switch” during one of his visits (at Tessenderlo Chemie – which currently uses Magnetrol’s guided wave radar). The operating principle is based upon the cooling effect caused by a medium when it flows past a heated point.

Removal of CrVI by the adsorption processes using low cost adsorbent sawdust
The rotary drum, fluid bed, and water-cooled screw conveyor have been the powder and bulk solids handling industry standards for heating or cooling bulk solids for many years. In this article Walter Turk takes a look at specialty-designed equipment for heating or cooling bulk solids with technology developed approximately fifteen years ago by Cominco Fertilizers (now Agrium Inc). ...

Vapour-liquid equilibrium study for multi-component system
In today's industrial world, where many chemical industries are facing the problem of separating various phases of multicomponent system, vapour -liquid equilibria is proving to be an ideal practical approach to overcome this tedious work. The actual industrial work requires separation of more than three or four components. For separation of components the system needs to attain equilibrium and this is the most challenging task that is being faced during analysis. Some extent of equilibrium can be achieved when components have similar chemical properties. ...
